A brass ship-builder's plaque, 'Built By / Charles Hill & Sons Ltd / Shipbuilders / Bristol / No.358 1949', 22.5cm x 30cm.
Note (1): Charles Hill & Sons was established in 1845, as the successor of the shipbuilding business started in 1748 by the Hilhouse family. During the Second World War the company's yards were blitzed on three occasions, but it defiantly continued building, repairing and refitting vessels, adopting the well-known saying 'Shipshape and Bristol fashion' as it's motto. With victory, commercial trading recommenced, the firm's launches including the P. & A. Campbell line paddle steamer 'Bristol Queen' (1946), four vessels for the Bristol Steam Navigation Company, the sand dredger 'Harry Brown' (1962), and a ferry boat for the Scilly Isles. Hill's Albion Dockyard finally closed, to make way for redevelopment, in 1977.
Note (2): This plaque is believed to have been carried by the M.V. Hotwells, a coal boat operated by the Bristol merchants Osborn & Wallis.
